Chiropractic care is a form of alternative medicine concerned with mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system.  This particular manufacturer wanted a table that would let the caregiver raise and lower the leg of a patient to exercise it after an injury.  Typically the injury was severe enough that the patient could not move their leg without aid.

At the beginning and the end of the session, the design engineer wanted the leg support to stop at a horizonal position so the patient could easily get on and off the table.  They also wanted the ability to disable this feature if the caregiver wanted to stop the leg at a particular non-horizontal position.  This manufacturer also wanted a timing function, and the ability to control the speed of this treatment based on the size and comfort of the patient.

KBVF Hrid Drive

To facilitate this, KB offered the KBVF-13 Hybrid Drive.  It let the manufacturer use a rugged, efficient 3 phase, 230 Vac induction motor and they power it with a normal 115 Vac plug.  This eliminated the need to hire an electrician to provide a special outlet.

This microprocessor based control became the heart of the system. 

KB allowed for speed control with a simple potentiometer. The manufacturer used a reed switch to provide an input to indicate the horizontal position.  Another input was used to enable or disable the home position feature.  A final input was used to select duration of the treatment.

The KB design team modified the standard software to provide a pre-programmed “Out of the Box” solution that was easily imbedded into their design.

Their table enclosure provided finger safety to eliminate unnecessary costs.  They asked, KB listened and brought a unique design to life.

Drive Review: Industry Standard for Knife Grinders

 

Knife making is the process of manufacturing a knife by a combination of processes.  Professional knife makers shape pieces of steel into blades as part of the knife making process.  They typically use a large industrial belt sander or grinder, made specifically for knife making. The belt sander or grinder is used to remove the excess metal from the blade and then hone it into the shape they need.  The knife making machine needs to run quickly when the knife maker is first starting on the blade, so they can remove the maximum amount of material.  It then needs to run more slowly when putting on a fine finish.  In addition to variable speed, the machine needs to provide controlled starting and fast stopping of the belt or grinder wheels.

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for a Commercial Convection Oven

Application:

A convection oven utilizes a stirring fan to circulate heated air which substantially reduces cooking time. The customer was purchasing an expensive drive manufactured in Europe which they desired to replace with a low cost drive manufactured in the USA. In the application, the drive receives serial communication commands from a PLC that provides the user with various cooking recipes. A standard drive could not be used because the communication protocol, although similar to Modbus, was unique and proprietary.

KB Solution:

The low cost KBVF Series VFD, with the DIDF Serial Communications Module, was chosen for this application. KB engineers were able to decode the proprietary serial communications protocol and reprogram the standard DIDF Communications Module.

The result was exactly what the customer desired-a low cost VFD assembled in the USA with proprietary serial communications. 

AC Drive for a Portable Duct Cleaner

Application:

A portable duct cleaner is designed to perform source removal duct cleaning inside various types of structures including homes, hospitals and commercial high-rises. Compared to clumsy van or truck-mounted units, this portable system offers exceptional flexibility needed to access and clean air handling systems on the first floor or the fifty-first floor.

The duct cleaner is a vacuum that is attached directly to the air handling system within the building. The vacuum produces a powerful airflow in the duct that pulls dirt and debris into the filtration system. As the vacuum operates, the filter begins to clog with debris which increases the AC line current. The application required that maximum air flow be maintained during this process without nuisance tripping of the circuit breaker.

An AC drive is needed to monitor and adjust the motor speed as the filter begins to clog. The drive must be simple to operate, capable of working with both 15 AMP and 20 AMP circuits, and be GFCI compatible. The drive was required to be mounted inside the duct cleaning unit and able to withstand vibration.

KB Solution:

KB engineers selected model KBAC-24D with custom software for this application. The drive was configured to operate with GFCI’s and was designed to be jumper selectable for both 15 AMP and 20 AMP circuits.

The KBAC uses a custom software algorithm to automatically maximize the vacuum performance without tripping the circuit breaker. The software monitors the AC line current and adjusts the motor speed to keep the current below the circuit breaker rating. This allows the duct cleaner to maintain maximum airflow as the filter begins to clog.  An on board indicator alerts the operator when to change the filter.

In addition to the custom software, the standard NEMA 4X enclosure was modified to allow the drive to be installed within the allotted space in the equipment. In order for the drive to withstand the shock and vibration during use, the application required that a silicon compound be used to secure several of the components. 

  



Custom AC Drive for a Boat Lift

Application: AC Drive for a Boat Lift

A boat lift is designed to store a boat out of the water when not in use and place it into the water when ready to be used.  Typical applications include private boats stored adjacent to lakes, rivers, or canals.  The system requires a Drive that can endure a harsh outdoor environment and contain inputs for limit switches.  The drive must also be capable of operating when wired to a GFCI circuit, must be simple to operate, and it must also contain Pass Code Protection.

KB Solution:

KB engineers selected model KBDA-27D with a custom Input/Output module.  The drive is housed in a NEMA 4X enclosure which makes it suitable for outdoor use.  It is rated for 1HP-3Ømotors and can operate from either a 115 or 230VAC line. 

Custom software was developed by KB which incorporated the specifications required for the application: 

  1. Dedicated input for high/low limit switches
  2. Tamper proof pass code system to prevent unauthorized use
  3. GFCI circuit operation
  4. Dedicated input for remote control operation
