KBAC Hybrid Drive For Misting Pumps - Case Study

KB Electronics, Inc. Manufacturer of AC Drives, DC Drives & Variable Speed Controls

Misting Pumps AC Motor Drive

Customer: Misting Systems Manufacturer

Location: USA

Application: Misting Pumps

Drive: KBAC Hybrid Drive

Ratings: 230 VAC motor from either 115 or 230 VAC single phase

Horsepower: 1 or 2 HP

Enclosure: NEMA 4X

Drive Review: Industry Standard for Mist Pumps

Misting Systems Pumps are used for a variety of applications; from keeping customers cool on a restaurant patio during hot summer months to maintaining the environment for livestock on a farm.

The manufacturer for this case study wanted the ability to automate the process for different misting systems and eliminate the need for user action.

Misting systems typically have multiple zones, capable of being turned on and off individually. The misting pump speed must be varied to maintain constant pressure regardless of how many zones are operating.

This was achieved by using a transducer to monitor the pressure in the misting system. The KBAC Drive regulates the pressure with a custom closed loop control regardless of any changes.

In addition, the customer benefited from using KB's auxiliary power supply for the transducer saving them the cost of sourcing a separate power supply.

The manufacturer also wanted special timing, safety, and diagnostic features to enhance their product further and the tools to quickly get their end users setup and running in a timely fashion.

KB achieved all of this with custom software which was built into the drive.

In conclusion, the manufacturer came to KB with a problem, KB listened and delivered a valuable solution, which brought a new design to life.

KBMG DC Drive For a Ball Pitching Machine

KB Electronics, Inc. Manufacturer of AC Drives, DC Drives & Variable Speed Controls

Ball Pitching Machine for Baseballs and Softballs

Customer: Pitching Machine Manufacturer

Location: USA

Application: Ball Pitching Machine

Drive: KBMG DC Drive

Ratings: Single phase 115 VAC line

Horsepower: up to 2 HP

Enclosure: Chassis

Drive Review: Industry Standard for Pitching Machines

In baseball or softball, pitching machines are often used in practice to deliver a pitch to a batter. Similar machines deliver tennis, soccer or volleyballs to a player to aid them in practicing. The ball is usually propelled by one spinning wheel or several wheels combined. Some machines use up to three wheels to deliver different styles of pitches, such as curve balls, sinkers or sliders.

KBMG DC Drive

The driving wheels need to be variable speed to deliver high-speed pitches to Major League hitters, or slower speed pitches to Little League hitters or softball players. Although the wheels typically have a high inertia, they need to change speed quickly to minimize the amount of time a hitter has to wait between pitches.

KB's solution was the compact mini-regen drive called the KBMG series of DC Drives. The KBMG can provide variable speed to DC motors up to 2 HP, while being powered from a single-phase 115 VAC line.  This allows the machine to be used on a diamond or court where only normal household power is available.

The regenerative feature allows the wheels to change speed quickly in spite of their inertia.  The rapid response of the KBMG brings the wheel back to speed quickly after each pitch.

The KBMG series motor drives also have a fast acting current limit circuit to prevent motor overload from the momentary high torque requirement during a pitch.

The KBMG Drive has the following features:

  • Ultra-compact Chassis
  • Rapid Response
  • Full-wave regenerative
  • Capable of operating DC PM or Shunt motors in a bidirectional mode
  • 4-quadrant operation provides forward and reverse torque in both speed directions.

The KBMG Drive produces a reliable quick response experience for the user.

KB Electronics DC Drives

KB Electronics, Inc. introduces the newest members of its KBAC Hybrid Drive™ family.

KB Electronics, Inc. Manufacturer of Variable Speed AC and DC Motor Controls

KB Electronics, Inc. of Coral Springs, Florida, a manufacturer of AC and DC Drives, is proud to introduce the newest members of its popular line of Hybrid Drives: Models KBAC-217 (5 HP) and KBAC-416 (10 HP).

Hybrid Technology- By definition, a hybrid is the merging of two technologies. These drives combine the digital technology of the microprocessor with an easy to use analog interface. Simple trimpot adjustments and selectable jumpers are used instead of complicated programming. You will be up and running in less than 10 minutes.

Applications –These new inverter products meet a broad spectrum of customer requirements. Conveyor systems, food and beverage systems, industrial fans and pumps will utilize the KBAC technology. The simple and robust design can be specified in retail, factory floor or harsh outdoor environments.

Safe and Secure- Built with all environmental concerns and the latest product safety in mind, these NEMA 4X / IP65 drives are housed in our newly designed heavy-duty die-cast aluminum package “C” enclosures. In addition, S-suffix models (e.g. KBAC-217S) contain a state of the art mechanical interlock on/off switch equipped with a safety lockout feature that can be used with a padlock, which prevents the drive from being turned on while the related equipment is being serviced.

An AC Line filter, which is available for all models, provides Class “A” RFI (EMI) suppression and complies with CE Council Directive 89/336/EEC Industrial Standard.  Add suffix “F” to any drive model.

“We are pleased to expand our product line of motor controls up to 10 HP” says Thomas Dalton, VP GM, KB Electronics, Inc. “This new model series of KBAC drives, in addition to a full line of accessories, will meet demanding customer requirements and be a great addition to our product line.”
