AC Drive for a Portable Duct Cleaner

KB Electronics, Inc. Manufacturer of AC Drives, DC Drives & Variable Speed Controls

A portable duct cleaner is designed to perform source removal duct cleaning inside various types of structures including homes, hospitals and commercial high-rises. Compared to clumsy van or truck-mounted units, this portable system offers exceptional flexibility needed to access and clean air handling systems on the first floor or the fifty-first floor.

The duct cleaner is a vacuum that is attached directly to the air handling system within the building. The vacuum produces a powerful airflow in the duct that pulls dirt and debris into the filtration system. As the vacuum operates, the filter begins to clog with debris which increases the AC line current. The application required that maximum air flow be maintained during this process without nuisance tripping of the circuit breaker.

An AC drive is needed to monitor and adjust the motor speed as the filter begins to clog. The drive must be simple to operate, capable of working with both 15 AMP and 20 AMP circuits, and be GFCI compatible. The drive was required to be mounted inside the duct cleaning unit and able to withstand vibration.

KB Solution:

KB engineers selected model KBAC-24D with custom software for this application. The drive was configured to operate with GFCI’s and was designed to be jumper selectable for both 15 AMP and 20 AMP circuits.

The KBAC uses a custom software algorithm to automatically maximize the vacuum performance without tripping the circuit breaker. The software monitors the AC line current and adjusts the motor speed to keep the current below the circuit breaker rating. This allows the duct cleaner to maintain maximum airflow as the filter begins to clog.  An on board indicator alerts the operator when to change the filter.

In addition to the custom software, the standard NEMA 4X enclosure was modified to allow the drive to be installed within the allotted space in the equipment. In order for the drive to withstand the shock and vibration during use, the application required that a silicon compound be used to secure several of the components.

Custom AC Drive for a Boat Lift

KB Electronics, Inc. Manufacturer of AC Drives, DC Drives & Variable Speed Controls

Application: AC Drive for a Boat Lift

A boat lift is designed to store a boat out of the water when not in use and place it into the water when ready to be used.  Typical applications include private boats stored adjacent to lakes, rivers, or canals.  The system requires a Drive that can endure a harsh outdoor environment and contain inputs for limit switches.  The drive must also be capable of operating when wired to a GFCI circuit, must be simple to operate, and it must also contain Pass Code Protection.

KB Solution:

KB engineers selected model KBDA-27D with a custom Input/Output module.  The drive is housed in a NEMA 4X enclosure which makes it suitable for outdoor use.  It is rated for 1HP-3Ømotors and can operate from either a 115 or 230VAC line.

Custom software was developed by KB which incorporated the specifications required for the application:

  1. Dedicated input for high/low limit switches
  2. Tamper proof pass code system to prevent unauthorized use
  3. GFCI circuit operation
  4. Dedicated input for remote control operation

A custom front label was developed which included the customer’s logo and special functions. In addition, the drive is factory programmed for Ready to Use, “Out-of-the-Box”. Read more Case Studies on our website.

DC Battery Operated Stair Lift Control

KB Electronics, Inc. Manufacturer of AC Drives, DC Drives & Variable Speed Controls

Application:  DC Battery Operated Stair Lift Control

Elderly or wheelchair-bound individuals use stair lift equipment to move up and down a flight of stairs. Ease of operation and reliability are important features of this product.

A motor and drive control the speed of the chair lift and enable it to stop and start in a smooth manner. The application requires a battery powered DC to DC drive that can be remote controlled and is capable of charging and maintaining the battery.

KB Solution:

The choice for this application is a newly designed control, the KBSL. KB’s engineers worked with the customer to develop the exact drive needed for this application.

Custom software and hardware inputs allow the customer to determine power up features, up/down logic and limit switches to control movement.

Customization includes being able to operate the lift from the chair controls or a handheld infrared remote control. An on board buzzer is programmed to notify the user at the start of operation and when the battery voltage is low. The customized battery charger operation maintains a constant voltage of 28.8 volts.

Adjustments include customer settable jumpers to allow selection of features including preset speeds and start up delays. Additional jumper adjustments allow the customer to select the remote channel ID and activate the brake function which contains short circuit protection.

Automatic Chip Conveyor

KB Electronics, Inc.

Application: Automatic Chip Conveyor

Conveyors that transport metal chips from machining centers are generally plagued with jam up problems. The chips accumulate to the point of system overload and eventually shut down the conveyor. The conveyors are fitted with manual controls for an operator to sequence the scrap material away from the machine. Lost production time results since the operator must now clear the jam and restart the system.

KB solution:

The choice for this application was a KBDA digital drive housed in a rugged die-cast NEMA-4X (IP-65) aluminum enclosure. The engineers at KB were able to develop custom software that senses a system overload prior to a jam up. A series of anti-jam sequences are performed very rapidly which clear the jam and allow the process to continue.
